On Suicide Prevention Week

For those of you who did not know, this week is National Suicide Prevention Week, and tomorrow is World Suicide Prevention Day.

In honor of this incredibly important week, I would like to share a poem that I found:

“There is a brokenness out of which comes the unbroken,
a shatterdeness out of which blooms the unshatterable.
There is a sorrow
beyond all grief which leads to joy
and a fragility out of whose depths emerges strength
There is a hollow space too vast for words
through which we pass with each loss,
out of whose darkness we are sanctioned into being.
There is a cry deeper than all sound
whose serrated edges cut the heart
as we break open to the place inside which is unbreakable and whole
While learning to sing.
 ” ~ Rashani

I know that for some of you, you may feel deep darkness and despair.  I have been there.  I had a depression that haunted me on and off for 10 years, and was so painful that there were times that I just wanted to give up.  But, out of the darkness, comes a beautiful dawn.  And, our suffering can turn us into people who are so compassionate to others; people who truly know what it is to suffer from depression also appreciate the joy in life so much more when it appears.  Your life will turn around.  And out of your pain, will emerge a new, even better version of yourself.  Don’t give up!  I promise it gets better.  I never would have imagined that my life would have been this amazing after it was painful for so long.  If you are ever thinking of hurting yourself, here is a number that you can call 24-7:  1-800-273-8255  It’s the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

You are precious and unique.  The world needs you to contribute your special skills and talents… the ones that you were born with.  And, I love each and every one of you.  I know that you can get through this!!!

Love,
~Emily
